Dear Innercity Intercessors,
February is a month very much associated with the celebration of relationships -- Valentine’s Day on the 14th and Family Day this year on the 20th. It may come as no surprise, therefore, that we invite you to please remember in prayer everyone on the streets who may not have that special loved one to share chocolates with on the 14th or enjoy a special outing with family members later in the month.
Family Day for many of our Street Friends can be especially painful. A lot of the time, life on the streets actually began because of family circumstances. Many stories start with fleeing homes, their own or foster, and choosing the streets as a safer alternative to chronic abuse or neglect or both. Typically, the consequences of those early environments and subsequent street life contribute to a multiplicity of health and social complications.
OIM is trying to make a difference. As an example, since 2009, our Innercity Arts program for homeless and at-risk young people, ages 16-32, has aimed at helping young people build skills, self-esteem, and resilience. Staff and empathetic volunteers encourage the youth to focus on their strengths and talents. This is a place where the youth are welcomed whatever their history. Art and music are the stimuli we offer to encourage personal growth. It helps that we also provide those coming each Wednesday or Thursday evening with a hot meal - that for some we know to be much needed.
Healthy relationships, acceptance, and a sense of community are all basic needs. Please pray this month that all of our street friends, and especially the young, find such fulfillment, whatever their circumstances. Please pray also that the Innercity Arts program achieves its objectives.
