he month of October marks the change of the seasons from the warmth to the gradual cold.
Traditionally, farmers in Canada bring in the harvest of grain and many other kinds at the latest during early October. We are grateful to God for the abundance of food that we have in this country, and for many who produce what we need.
In the Church, we often read the following Psalm at this time of year:
Psalm 100 A psalm. For giving grateful praise.
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his[a];
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.God is good to us. And this is a season to rehearse, to tell again why we believe God is good with our friends, families, co-workers, and anyone else who will listen.
It is easy to dwell on our challenges, our hurts, our wounds, but this week and this season, we turn again to God with praise and thanksgiving. Worship is our thanksgiving. In fact, the word used in Greek for “Thanksgiving” is eucharisteo. From this word we get the word Eucharist, which many Christians call the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion. We are giving thanks, even as Jesus gave thanks at the Table. Not because the road ahead for Jesus to cross was going to be easy, but because He was truly thankful for what God was going to accomplish through Him.
We are called again this year to be thankful people. How do we know if we are? Let us focus on the goodness of God, worshipping Him, trusting Him together, taking His Word seriously, because God’s Word is reliable, necessary and sufficient.
I trust as you sit around the table during Thanksgiving that you will take some time with each family member and friend to give specific reasons for thanking God.
